❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common DOT Compliance questions

What happens during a DOT Level 1 inspection?+
A Level 1 inspection is the most comprehensive — the inspector examines both the driver and the vehicle. They'll check your CDL, medical card, HOS logs/ELD, drug and alcohol compliance, vehicle brakes, tires, lights, steering, suspension, frame, and all safety equipment. It typically takes 45-60 minutes.
What happens if you fail a DOT drug test?+
If you fail a DOT drug test, you're immediately removed from safety-sensitive duties (driving). The violation is reported to the FMCSA Clearinghouse. You must complete a return-to-duty process through a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), which includes evaluation, treatment, and follow-up testing before you can drive commercially again.
How much are DOT fines for HOS violations?+
FMCSA penalties for HOS violations range from $1,000 to $16,000+ per violation depending on severity. Driving over hours can result in the driver being placed out of service. Pattern violations or egregious offenses can lead to even higher penalties for both the driver and the motor carrier.
What is the difference between a DOT number and MC number?+
A DOT number is your federal identification number required for all commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. An MC number (Motor Carrier number) is your operating authority — it gives you legal permission to haul freight for compensation. You need a DOT number first, then apply for MC authority if you're hauling freight for hire.
What permits does a trucking company need in 2026?+
At minimum, trucking companies need: USDOT Number, MC Authority (if for-hire), BOC-3 filing, IFTA fuel tax permit (for interstate), IRP vehicle registration (for interstate), UCR registration, and state-specific permits. Oversize/overweight loads require additional special permits from each state you'll travel through.
